40 Days of Moving: Days 15 and 16

On Saturday, Robin and I went to an appliance place and bought a dishwasher and a free standing range. While the cooktop looked like it was in good shape the built-in oven definitely needed replacement. It looked like there had been a fire inside. It seems that built-in ovens are very expensive; much more than buying an entire range. So both will be replaced by a free-standing range. I don’t really understand this, but I suppose it’s more a matter of what the market will bear than any reality. The dishwasher may have also been OK, but it seemed like a good idea to do it as well.

Originally I was going to do almost nothing in the kitchen. All of this really snuck up on me. Altogether I’m replacing some really ugly light fixtures, having the cabinets painted, replacing the two appliances, the floor and then repainting the walls and ceiling. There was no choice about the painting. We found a lot of unpainted wall and two different wallpaper patterns behind the oven and cabinet we pulled out. All of this was done today.

In the meantime, Perry the painter has been working like crazy. He’s very quiet, works by himself and has music playing softly near him. He hasn’t begun to paint yet; it’s all preparation. That’s the way it’s supposed to be, but I’m really anxious to see the paint.

40 Days of Moving: Day 14

Today was a real moving day; spent much of it packing. My upstairs neighbors got married earlier this month and received presents in large boxes. I asked for the boxes and I’m happily using them. Today I emptied two kitchen cabinets with stuff I almost never used and started on the drawers in the kitchen. I have a collection of small specialized cooking tools that I also never used. Some of them are going out, but I can’t seem to part with all of them. I got one very full drawer packed up and started on another. Also packed the humidifiers. I won’t use them again until next winter so that was easy.

One of my neighbors took me out for a lovely luncheon party. She and two other neighbors took me to the Frick Cafe–always a great lunch. Since I’m only moving three miles away I’m sure we didn’t need a going away party, but it was fun. When the weather is nice it’s a great place to eat outside. No traffic adding fumes to the food. Unfortunately, today was beautiful but chilly. No one was outside.

After lunch I went over to the apartment. Each time I go I take at least one item I don’t want to pack. Today it was a plastic garbage bag filled with quilt bats and other kinds of interfacing. Someday I’ll make that quilt. I haven’t insured the apartment yet so I don’t want to bring anything valuable. Next month I’ll have insurance on both places and start to carry my Papua New Guinea sculptures and a few other fragile valuables. I also plan to carry the computer and printers but that will be last.

Perry was still working on the walls when I arrived. All the wallpaper is gone and he was repairing the holes that were hidden by the paper. I think he will start painting, possibly tomorrow. He wasn’t sure if he could come. I’m in no hurry, but I think he is. The bathroom and my workroom will be a warm white. Everything else will be a kind of beige. You’ll have to wait for the pictures.

The new medicine cabinet arrived this afternoon. It’s now waiting to be installed along with the flooring. Ed and Meg have plenty of work to do. Ed began removing the built-in oven and found an electrical box with heavy wiring leading to the oven and the cooktop. Ugly stuff. I would have liked to put the new range where the cooktop is now, but I may have to put it in the corner so it hides the box. I’m waiting for Ed to remove all that stuff and maybe I can think of some other way to hide the box.

I went back to Home Depot. I think I go there after every second time I visit the apartment. There is always something to look for, but I’ve been happier buying online so far.

40 Days of Moving: Day 12, and 13

That’s Tuesday and today, Thursday. Yesterday I got on the Megabus and went to Washington, DC to an art exhibit: Colorful Realm, Japanese Bird-and-Flower Paintings by Itō Jakuchū. The exhibit was wonderful, but much too crowded, really spoiling it for me. I was going to stay overnight, but couldn’t find a reasonably priced hotel room within a reasonable distance of the city. I got back on the bus and came home. So yesterday wasn’t a moving day. I was gone from 6am Wednesday morning to 1:15am Thursday morning. The bus was very late.

Monday afternoon I finally got a price from Bob, the kitchen cabinet spray guy. He caught me as I was getting into the car. I didn’t want to make an instant decision so I told him I’d get back to him. Painting metal is a highly specialized deal. He may be the only one in Pittsburgh who does it. I think the price is OK, but I wanted more info. Tuesday morning I called another woman I know in the building. I got lucky. She has the same cabinets and had them sprayed ten years ago. She invited me down to see them, and they’re very nice, still very nice. I also looked at her bathroom and found a solution for my medicine cabinet problem: a piece of wood covering the hole and then surface mounting the cabinet. Ordered the new cabinet and Ed will take care of it. Bob will come and spray the cabinets on May 14. In the meantime, Ed has to remove the built in oven, one cabinet, and the cooktop, then move the cooktop cabinet to the other side. Bob said we could even install the new countertops if we wanted. I don’t know if we’ll get that far.

Most of the wallpaper is now gone; Perry was finishing up in the hall this afternoon. Here is the wall without the peacock feathers. It will get painted along with all of the other walls.

The flooring I bought over the weekend was delivered this morning. Ed and Meg, his daughter/helper brought it up to the apartment. It’s supposed to acclimate to the apartment temperature for 3-7 days, so they won’t install until next week.

40 Days of Moving: Days 9, 10 & 11

Spent the weekend immersed in flooring. One of the people who came to show me samples and give me price quotes recommended Lumber Liquidators. Robin and I went there Saturday afternoon. They were having their annual sale: good prices, chaotic atmosphere. Finally got info about all the possibilities, got some samples and left. I went back on Sunday and ordered enough of a teak-like laminate to do the living room, small bedroom and kitchen. Today was a real workday. Ed and Meg came back and worked on the electrical stuff. Perry, the painter, removed the peacock feathers and may have started removing the wallpaper in the small bedroom. I left; decided they didn’t need me there to watch.

Update on decisions: I am repainting the living room. It wasn’t on the original list. I probably can’t replace the medicine cabinet. The one that’s in place is 30 inches wide by 22.5 inches high. New ones are 26 inches high. I don’t have the necessary 4 inches because of the two soap dishes on the wall. Removing them would require new tiles, maybe a new wall. It’s not going to happen.

40 Days of Moving: Day 8

When I arrived Ed was busy removing the so-called built-in desk in the small bedroom. This was another one of those truly appalling do-it-yourself jobs. The desk was sitting on a piece of green shag carpeting. The wall behind it had evidence of grasscloth wallpaper.  Maybe I’m too much of a purist, but I would never leave such a mess under anything I did. It would bother me almost as much as that green color inside the kitchen cabinets.

The worst was what was done with electricity. Most of the walls in the building are concrete or very thick plaster. This is good, but little or no thought was wasted on providing electricity. The seller assured me he had added outlets and I wouldn’t have any problems. Too bad there isn’t some way to charge him with building code violations. Ed will be able to fix much of this and make me happier. After all, it’s only money, right?

We didn’t do any work in the bathroom, but I finally took pictures. Here is the wallpaper that will be removed. Perry is coming on Monday to begin wallpaper removal and then painting. I’m planning to make the wall and ceiling a warm white. I’m also planning to make the small bedroom the same warm white, since that is where I will work. I don’t want a color reflected on my computer monitor or on the papers I use for my books.

More pictures of the bathroom: You can see the blue in the corner of the tub. It looks like a soap stain but it’s really the beige color peeling off. Note the grab bars. I’m very pleased to have them.

The new light bar over the medicine chest made a big difference. The original extended over almost the entire wall and had a florescent bulb. I like this much better. The next question is do I replace the medicine chest. It has some barely noticeable rust spots. There is no end to the things I could replace.

Another really good thing is the height of the toilet. I can stand up without having my knees sending me agony messages.

Forty Days of Moving: Day 7

Remember that awful chandelier? It was the first thing we replaced. I’m so pleased with the result. Ed arrived on schedule at 9am. First he removed the sconces only to find wallpaper with green leaves underneath. We decided to wait until the wall was painted before we installed the new fixtures. But, then he made me really happy with the chandelier replacement.

I never took a good before-picture of the bathroom, but we replaced an awful light fixture in there also. We still have to remove wallpaper and paint in there. There is gray ceramic tile on the walls and beige fixtures. One wall and ceiling have wallpaper with a gray and beige pattern on white, along with lots of silver. I’m going for white wall and ceiling.

The toilet and basin are relatively new. The tub was blue originally; probably all the fixtures were blue. The tub was refinished and some of the paint is coming off. I’d love to remove it and put in a walk-in shower, but it’s not going to happen.

Ed finished the workday by removing the trellis. I’m not sure what we’ll do there. Maybe another dropped ceiling (without a trellis) is necessary. I’ll put in track lighting, but that trellis covered a multitude of sins that will have to be fixed. Haven’t heard from the cabinet painter or the floor guy. I can’t believe it takes days to figure an estimate. Do you think they don’t need the business?

Forty Days of Moving: Day 6

I thought yesterday would not be a moving day and I’m not counting it, but I can’t get away from the project. After my car inspection I visited a friend out in the South Hills and on my way home I just happened to pass another Home Depot. Walking through the lighting section I was stopped by a young man who was pushing cabinet refacing for kitchens. It was something I never thought about, so I agreed to have a consultant come to see me. That was the third appointment for today.

I began the day with Brian, who came with floor samples from Costco. He measured and wrote endless quotes and was still writing when Bill arrived from the company that spray paints metal. He drew pictures of the kitchen cabinet configurations, didn’t measure, and promised to call with a quote. Brian finally finished writing and we walked over to his truck to look at samples. He also promised to call with quotes. I’ve been asking for a quote for the floors in the  kitchen and small bedroom and a separate quote for the living room, which I am still pondering (doing, that is).

I’ve been told the carpet is new, but there is a strange odor in the room that I never noticed the first three times we were in the apartment. It only appeared after the apartment was emptied. It doesn’t seem to be in any of the other rooms. I opened windows all over trying to air it out. That’s another reason to change the flooring.

Right on schedule at three o’clock Mike from Home Depot Refacing Dept. showed up. He told me all about refacing and then measured all the cabinets and countertops. At the end he gave me a firm quote on the entire kitchen job. There are only two problems: the green color inside the cabinets would still be there, and the cost, while very reasonable, is all the money I want to spend at this time. While I understand the importance of a good kitchen it is not something I really care about at this time. All I really need is a microwave, a toaster oven and a refrigerator. So this remains to be seen.

My new light fixtures for the dining room showed up today. I think I will like them. Ed called and he will come tomorrow and begin work on fixtures and some other things.

40 Days of Moving: Day 5

Back to the apartment this morning with more stuff. Then I spoke with Bill, the maintenance man and Ralph, the garage man, getting more information about the building and the apartment. Went to a nearby carpet and flooring store. They have wonderful things but everything is more money than I want to spend. Bill gave me the name of a company that spray paints metal cabinets. I will be meeting with them on Wednesday morning, along with another floor installation company. Tomorrow will not be a moving day. The car is going in for the yearly inspection and then I’m going to visit a friend who has also just moved.

40 Days of Moving: Day 4

Yesterday when I bought the floor lamp I also bought 2 orchids. Home Depot sells them so cheaply I couldn’t resist. This morning I brought them to the apartment and they are enjoying the wonderful north light. I went with a carful of stuff: framed pictures, the new floor lamp, a few other things. I drove into the garage and introduced myself to the attendant, who brought a cart and helped put the stuff into it. I plan to do this with all the stuff I’d rather not pack for the movers. I have an awful lot of framed pictures. That will be the story for most of these 40 days.

I put the lamp together and put it in bedroom 2. I haven’t decided where to store all the framed pics. Some will go on the walls, some will be stored. I have not decided which closet won’t get painted. Each time I return I find more things I want to do.

Back to the before pictures. The hallway leads to the two bedrooms and the bathroom. The large bedroom is at the far end. It’s been painted a dark green. The carpet is relatively new and I will probably just clean it and leave it in place. The dark green walls suck up all the light, so they will go.

There is a wonderful, large fitted closet. This is just a peek at it. I’m sure all my clothes and shoes will fit nicely.

The second bedroom needs lots of work. A large desk takes up most of one wall (left) and is supposedly built in. It has to be removed. There is no carpet under it, so the carpet will have to be changed (needed anyway), and the entire room, including the closet, needs painting.

This is the other view of the room. I don’t know where the pink came from on the wall, which had a bed up against it. Maybe it’s the white paint wearing off. There are four bookcases against the left wall. I will probably move two of them into the other bedroom; maybe get rid of two of them. At least I know I’ll be able to house all of my books.

This is where I will work. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but I want it to be pleasant.

I never photographed the bathroom. Next time.

The kitchen needs a new oven, possibly a new dishwasher. The cabinets are metal; I think one of the old St. Charles kitchens. it was originally aqua, or I think they called it avocado.

My cabinets were sprayed white outside, but nothing was done inside, as you can see. The outside needs to be redone and I’d like to have the inside done. The built in oven looks like it had a fire inside. I’m thinking about removing it and replacing it and the cooktop with an ordinary range. Some of the cabinets will be sacrificed; not a problem for me.

The other wall has a newer cabinet that may have been used as a place to sit and eat. I have a nice butcher block table that may replace it. The door at the center of the picture is a large pantry. Since I do very little cooking this will become another storage room.

40 Days of Moving: Day 3

Day 2 was yesterday, Friday the thirteenth. First we did the walk through; just a formality in this case. I have to leave my present apartment by May 31. It’s too late to look for anything else, and in fact, nothing else I wanted has come on the market. So I did not negotiate the price or any of the minor annoyances I would have liked to have changed. After all, it’s only money. The closing took less than an hour and was relatively painless, the painful part having been on Day 1 when I wired the money from my account. All the kinks had been worked out previously. I went back to the new apartment afterward and inspected and thought and photographed for about two hours. Here are photos and some of my thoughts.

This is the entry door from inside the living room. There are good closets on either side. I’m probably keeping the gold colored walls, but I’m thinking about making that entry area all white. I need some help making that decision.

The living room itself is quite large and I probably don’t have enough furniture. Empty rooms are nice. Actually, I have too much furniture–just not the right stuff.

Looking to the right there are mirrored, built-in shelves. I find the mirror confusing, but after I put stuff on the shelves it will probably be OK.

Then there is the wall. It sits between the living room and dining room, making the dining room about a foot too small. The wallpapering job is amazing. I could hardly find a seam. Amazing or not, I can’t live with large green peacock feathers. We’ll come back to the dining room.

There is a wall of windows, facing north, making the room very light. I will probably get shades that close from the bottom up, allowing me to hide the parking lots below, but let the light come in.

On to the dining room, smaller but in need of more work.

The chandelier is going, along with some enormous sconces that show in the next picture. I found some wonderfully funky looking fixtures in Home Depot online and ordered them. My dining room table and chairs will be very tight in there. I’m still thinking about it.

The floor seems to be travertine. I’m happy it’s not carpeted. I’m actually thinking about removing the living room carpet, which is relatively new, and installing a wood floor.

Next is the dreaded hallway.

That’s the dropped ceiling with florescent lights. Note the wall paper and the closet door. There are three of those doors, very high on my priorities of the things that go. I feel oppressed in there.

It’s is getting very late and I’m ready to go to sleep. I’ll finish this on day 4. Day 3 was uneventful. I put a stack of large drawing tablets, book board and foamcore into the car and took it to the apartment. I intend to bring something every day–all the things that would be difficult to pack. I also bought a cheap floor lamp. Both bedrooms and the living have no lights. Another thing to think about.
