Eli

I spent most of the last two days with Eli and his girl friend. We toured art and architecture in downtown Pittsburgh on Wednesday. Yesterday we went to Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob. You can see Eli’s photos of our tours here.

Eli has now finished high school. GF is an exchange student from Chile. She will return home next week and spend another six months in her high school at home. Eli is going to Chile to spend the summer with her. They are very much in love, as I think only eighteen year olds can be. It will be interesting to see what happens to their relationship. Both of them have plans for the future that would keep them apart.

Back in my own bed

without Darcy. She slept with me (on top of me) for 2 full nights. The third night she came to bed after I had fallen asleep, ha ha. The fourth night she never came up, but I waited for her. If I had ever entertained thoughts of getting a dog, she has cured me. Although walking her twice a day is probably better than the health club.

Bag Lady 2

I had a website in 1996 or 1997, years before most people knew about the Internet. I was teaching how to build websites and had a consulting job building one. My site had some personal and family things on it, similar to many at the time. This is the image I used on my homepage:Baglady3

I thought of myself as the baglady on a bicycle. I used to love riding and did it until I moved to New Jersey. Coming from the flat land of Chicago I could not deal with the hilly terrain. Also, I developed a fear of falling. I heard one too many horror stories about falling off a bicycle.

The baglady part came because I could actually envision myself becoming a bag lady. When I thought about getting a divorce and not knowing whether I would get any kind of decent job that baglady crept into my psyche.

Bag Lady 1

Back in April I went to a potluck fundraiser for the Fiber Arts Guild of Pittsburgh. They had a silent auction and a Chinese auction for lots of interesting, donated stuff. I bought a lot of tickets and put them all in the bag for this gardening basket full of fabrics,Bag3
which I won. It was much more interesting than it looks here, because I had already pulled everything out and used some of the fabric before I decided to take the photograph. The fabrics inspired me and I have already made two bags:Bag1

I used to do a lot of sewing. Among the things I brought from Chicago eight years ago are many boxes for fabric pieces. I have been trying to get rid of them so I’ve been making bags. I have probably made two dozen bags already. I use them myself or I give them away. I didn’t need any more fabric, but it was fun to win something.

Tulip Tree 2

Last week a tree trimmer came and worked on all of the trees on the property. I think he butchered the tulip tree and I’m very unhappy about it. He removed two large branches near the house. They weren’t close enough to do any damage; they just had a few small dead branches. The tree looks bare now. They cleaned up most of what they removed, but one small branch and some flowers remained on the ground. The inside of the flowers look like this:

If you believe this one,

then I have a bridge to sell you. I just sent an email to a friend and noticed this bit of advertising above the inbox:

$3000/Week Knitting?AmericanCraftsInstitute.Org$99 One Day Training Course. Learn To Make $3000/Week Making Crafts!
What a hoot! In all of the years I have been making art, or crafts, I figure I’ve never made more than 50 cents an hour. Even working every hour, 24/7, I don’t think you get to $100 a week. The only people making money on this thing are the people selling the training course.

Dog Sitting

Robin and Steve are going away for a few days and I am going to sleep at their house and take care of Darcy and the house. For the most part Eli and Charna no longer need much from me; they take care of themselves. One of these days I suppose they’ll take care of me.

Tonight Charna and I will go downtown to the gallery crawl. I’m not taking her–we are just going together.

Tai Chi

This is for Grace. You missed an interesting class today. As I walked into the facility, teacher called my name and put her hand on my shoulder–very friendly. I guess she was flattered that I finally came back. I was impressed that she knew my name. There were a lot of new people today. One woman walked in barefoot. Teacher told her she was very brave; who knew what was on the floor. As usual, a little hostility was evident. Barefoot left after about 10 minutes. We did not stop moving for the first 25 minutes of the class. Altogether she led us through every complex motion she has ever used. My brain was going nuts trying to keep up with right and left. She does seem to make things more difficult when there are new people. You are right about that. The class is more fun when you are there. Come back soon.

3 Rivers Art Festival

is an annual event, most notable for bringing rain with it each year. It’s held downtown, on and around Point Park, the place where Pittsburgh’s three rivers meet. I went down on Saturday afternoon, looked at some of the art, ate something decadent for dinner, then started walking out to the event stage. I was meeting the family for the Buckwheat Zydeco concert. On the way out I passed three booths set up by AARP and Vital Radiance. They were looking for "real people" over 50 to feature in the magazine and were offering a mini-makeover to prepare you to have your picture taken for the mag. I wasn’t much interested in the 15 minutes of fame, but the mini-makeover appealed to me. They put some blush on my cheeks and did a real number with three kinds of lip color. I don’t use much makeup, and I forgot to look at myself after they finished. They rushed me through because the rains came. Robin said I looked nice.

The rain stopped before the concert began, but then started up again. Everyone huddled under umbrellas, tarps and trees, and the musicians kept playing. It was a great concert.

I have a tulip tree in my front yard. Although I had heard of tulip trees, I had never seen one and did not realize what the tree was in front of my house.Tuliptree
Several weeks ago I noticed petals on the ground and looked up to see flowers in the tree. The flowers have lasted a long time, and I have really enjoyed them.

This part of Pittsburgh has marvelous lush, gardens around each house. Unlike the areas around Chicago where everyone seems besotted about growing beautiful, useless, smooth green lawns, people here have a wonderful variety of plants and flowers that enhance the hilly terrain. Springtime has been gorgeous.
